On the Road - Part 2
by Alex

Continuing from yesterday... here's how I approach my main meals across the day.
Breakfast
What works for you? Do you have any tips for eating right while traveling?
- I never skip breakfast.
- If my hotel has a continental breakfast, I’m sure to grab a couple of extra pieces of fruit to put in my bag for later.
- Starbucks and McDonald’s have fruit smoothies if I’m really in a rush. The Starbucks smoothies have protein, the McDonald’s ones do not, but then I just mix in some whey protein powder. (Be a little careful with these choices as they have a significant amount of "SUGAR", which is never a good choice)
- I always remember to round the meal out with a handful of almonds.
- I always make sure to get some protein and vegetables.
- Most of the time I order salads with a lean protein.
- Dressing is usually some sort of vinaigrette, and always on the side. Restaurants put way to much dressing on salads and that’s where most of the bad calories come from.
- If you like creamy dressings and can’t resist, get it on the side and dip the tip of your fork in the dressing before getting a bite of salad. I find that gives me the flavor, but the actual amount is pretty small.
- Many times I find myself at a Whole Foods or other grocery store where I have a lot of good options and I can re-stock my snacks at the same time.
- This is the meal that I usually have time to sit down and enjoy, so I let myself have something I love- a glass of wine, or something sweet, but the key for me is just to have a few bites to satisfy my sweet tooth, but not derail all the good eating I’ve done all day.

Nice, those almond butter packets are perfect, I'll have to check those out.
I've found that I'm most successful eating well on the road when I A) come prepared (larabars, paleo kits, beef jerky, almonds, etc) and B) maintain a consistent schedule (eat every 3 hours no matter what).
I'll second Alex's tip on raiding the continental breakfast for fruit and water - take it when you can get it, and you have no excuses. Grok would approve, it's very hunter-gatherer.

I always bring oatmeal (in packets) and then bring individual trail mix packets from Trader Joe's. Nuts, dried fruit, sunflower seeds, etc. I try to remember to bring some plastic spoons, but half the time I am scrounging them from somewhere in the hotel. But almost every hotel has a coffeemaker in the room so I can get hot water.
Also, beef jerky is a good snack that is easy to bring along. If I'm traveling in the US and have a rental car, I will go to a grocery store and stock up on stuff. Especially if I have a fridge in the hotel room.

Agreed. Those almond packets are truly decicious. Scott was kind enough to give us couple of sample packets awhile back, and I love 'em. I now have a stash here at work for when I get the munchies and don't want to gnaw on the whole almonds.

I can't believe I forgot about my MASHUPS. Squeezable fruit. Seriously. I pretty much just go for the berry flavor, but sometimes these suckers hit the spot. http://products.revfoods.com/products
I prefer the fruit in it's natural state, but these travel better than any piece of fruit I have ever traveled with.
Love TJ's snack nut packs. Whole foods has some tasty blends as well-(marketed for the school bag lunch!)
Can you tell I have my travel 'Rules' and favorites dialed in? Food is a passionate subject for me anyhow!

Here area couple of my travel tips:
One of my necessities is this collapsible bowl http://www.rei.com/product/791968and my camping spoon/fork. I can make a bowl of oatmeal anywhere-toss in some nuts, apple and cinnamon (I bring this too) and I am good to go. Lots of other uses as well, of course
And a HUGE lifesaver for me are these packets of Almond Butter http://www.justinsnutbutter.com/products.php. The little travel packs are the best. My faves are the regular almond and the Maple Almond. Good protein, good fat, good and tasty.
